Old Age Home - A lost dream of paradise

When Shankar & Swapna was 7 and 5 yrs, their father Harish left the family on a sunny 

morning. He went out to buy some daily commodities and got missing or may be absconded 

and never to come back. Devika waited along with kids for years without any  ray of hope (all

 the names are changed).On the next day morning they went to local police station to report 

the missing diary, but the station in-charge denied to lodge the report. 

Till date no missing report is registered. The lady at her early thirties spent night after night 

without sleep, awaking even on a slight sound, that her Harish has come back. It was really a ery tough time with two kids. She used to work as a part time cook at an old couple’s house, and her children used to make the paper packets from the saggy news papers to sell in grocery shop for packaging. During high school and college days they used to give tuition to students and were earning livelihood for the family. Devika still continued the cook’s job as the couple 

was very much caring and they used to incur the partial expense of Shankar and Swapna’s 

education. Both of them were good students and the teachers were very happy. They grew up,and the family again gradually settled. The struggle was seemed to be at an end. Shankar got 

married to a girl from a businessman family; Swapna married her colleague and left for United States for permanent settlement and Devika, with her son and daughter-in-law. The 

remaining portion of the story you all perhaps know that one evening Shankar and his wife asked their mother to leave the home. ……………….. Now she is staying in an Old Age Home, 

sponsored by someone; who is in our magazine team.It was just not a storyline but a fact to begin this pensive article of Old Age Home - A lost dream of paradise.

Throughout the world the elderly persons are ignored, overlooked to avail the rights, abused, mistreated and abandoned or even murdered. These unfortunate and underprivileged aged 

people are compelled to splurge their most of the time in temples, verandas of community 

centers, parking, bus stand and even at crematorium under the open sky in winter and or 

summer. 

The family system and Social values have been undergoing a significant change which is not favorable to the aged. Ironic, however it may sound, longevity is a blessing but age is curse. The very concept of an old age home in India is usually the place, a home for those old people who have no one to look after them or those who have been thrown out of their homes by their children. In India till now, the old people staying away from the home, from their children, or left to themselves is not considered to be in a very happy situation. This concept of separating the elders from the youngsters has been imported into India from the West.

However, for the West it may not be so heart rending because there, it is the original life style that two generations never stay under one roof. There people work not essentially to render 

the livelihood rather to buy comfort, security and local stand in the society. Considering the 

future attributes government deducts a portion of an individual’s income and plans to outlay 

the same at his / her old age for shelter, medical expenses and pension. There planning in 

infrastructure is so organized that no one minds to go to an Old Age Home at later age. But 

scenario in India is entirely different. You may pull some exception, but exception cannot be the example in vast. In our country the middle and upper middle class segment (Even lower and upper income segment), the parents groom their children up to completion of education even up to post graduation level, then they guide them for job till they start earning a standard 

livelihood; simultaneously try to get them married, if not otherwise oriented, even in some 

cases they make them settle up to the birth of the third generation. Now doing up to that much without any expectation or in some cases with some expectations too, does it not the 

responsibility of the child to look after the parents with them and care? Everywhere the 

misunderstandings, partial non-co-operation, selfishness etc are there but family is such an 

institution where everything gets amalgamated.  In India where, for centuries, not only two but also even three generations have lived together before this so called new concept of nuclear 

family and the old age homes have had to come up to cater to the needs of the elderly.

Old Age Home is considered as a retirement home, a multi-residence housing facility 

intended for senior citizens –either charitable, sponsored or paid. It is the aged men's 

unfortunate and unexpected destination, despite providing all fortunes and meeting 

expectation, as far as possible, for their beloved kin. Old Age Home is an achievement and 

success blueprint of today's nuclear family, the believer and killer reason for all old aged 

sentiments. 

The nuclear family, a universal social trend, is a small team composed of self-interested 

husband - wife and children which constitutes a unit apart from the parents. Immediately after the marriage of the children, they also leave their parental home and establish their separate household. Hence, a nuclear family is an autonomous unit free from the control of the elders. Of course there is physical distance between parents and their adult, married or unmarried 

children, and obviously a less freedom and interdependence along with the difference in line 

of thinking and the wave length of thought potential.

Due to various reasons today’s women have started doing job in all spheres of society. Even it is seen in many cases that the attitudes of women towards the elders, that to consider the 

elders as ineffectual appendages in the family. This attitude of the women in west was also 

largely contributed to the removal of elders from families considering their socio economic 

attributes. With this surroundings, the essentiality for old age homes was felt, and due to our 

imitating attitudes of the western culture the necessity of old age home is increasingly felt 

during the present time. As a result the discontented requirement for old age homes is 

obviously felt even in Indian middle class society which is highly alarming for the today’s 

youngsters who have forgotten the truth that some day they also would become old; and someone will discard them to an Old Age Home, considering rubbish.

The interventions are needed from all of us who are apparently holding a social stand and 

needed for the aged to lead a happy, peaceful and dignified life till their last breath. They 

should be provided with mental & emotional support; with possibilities and facilities to cope 

up with the problems in their old age. These groups of deprived & underprivileged should not face any problems for their survival and endurance. Once they also had families. The paradox of “family” - the word which is derived from the Latin word familia, means household, a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head or leader.
